You’re posting on Instagram. You’ve tried email marketing. Maybe you’ve even paid for ads, started a blog, or downloaded approximately 47 PDFs promising business marketing tactics that will change your life. And yet… crickets.
Before you decide marketing doesn’t work for your business, I want you to look at what comes before the marketing: your brand. Because if your branding is unclear, your message isn’t speaking to the right person, and your visuals are all over the place, sending MORE people to your business isn’t necessarily going to solve the problem.

Branding vs. Marketing: What’s the Difference?
Branding and marketing work together, but they aren’t the same thing. Your brand strategy establishes who you serve, what makes your business different, what you want to be known for, how your business communicates, and how you want people to experience your brand.
Marketing is how you take that brand out into the world. Your social media, email campaigns, SEO, networking, advertising, and content are all ways you market your business. But what those things say, who they’re speaking to, and the impression they create are rooted in your brand.
Think of your brand as the foundation and marketing as the megaphone. If the message going into the megaphone isn’t clear, making it louder isn’t going to fix it.

Before Trying More Business Marketing Tactics, Look at Your Brand
When marketing isn’t generating the response you want, start by asking whether your brand is clear. Can someone land on your website and quickly understand what you do, who it’s for, and why they should care? Does your website feel like the same business as your Instagram? Do your photographs, colors, words, and overall personality belong together?
You should also ask whether your brand reflects where your business is going. This is a BIG one. Sometimes your business has grown up, but your brand hasn’t grown with it. You’ve gained experience, improved your services, increased your prices, and changed the type of clients you want to attract, but your website and photos are still representing the business you had three years ago.
That’s not necessarily a marketing problem. It’s a branding problem.

Are You Talking to the Right Person?
One of the most important parts of a strong brand strategy is knowing exactly who you’re trying to reach. And I don’t mean “women ages 30–55.” I mean understanding the actual person behind those demographics. What does she want? What is frustrating her? What has she already tried? What is keeping her from making a decision? What does she value when choosing someone like you?
The better you understand your ideal client, the easier it becomes to create marketing that makes her stop and think, WAIT. She’s talking to me. That’s when your marketing starts connecting instead of simply adding more noise to someone’s feed.

Your Brand Messaging Matters
Your brand messaging should connect what you offer to something your ideal client actually wants, needs, or cares about. Let’s say you’re a professional organizer. You could market yourself by saying, “We offer professional home organization services.” Accurate? Yep. Memorable? Ehhhh.
Your potential client might actually be thinking, “I am so tired of cleaning this room only for it to become a disaster again two days later.” That’s the conversation you need to join. Great marketing starts when you stop speaking at an audience and start communicating with the person who genuinely needs what you do.
This doesn’t mean using manipulative language or constantly focusing on pain points. It means understanding your client’s perspective well enough to talk about your service in a way that’s relevant to their actual life.

Your Photos Are Communicating, Too
Words aren’t the only part of your brand messaging. Your visuals are talking before someone reads a single paragraph. Your website photographs, social media images, headshots, behind-the-scenes content, and even the locations you choose for your photos all contribute to someone’s impression of your business.
As a Denver branding photographer, I don’t want to create a collection of random pretty photos and call it branding. I want to know the strategy first. Who are we talking to? What should they understand about you? How should your brand feel? What parts of your process should we show? What photographs will you actually need for your website, social media, emails, blogs, and upcoming campaigns?
That’s why strategy comes before the shot list. The goal isn’t simply to look professional. It’s to make sure the visuals are communicating the right message to the right person.

Business Marketing Tactics Work Better With a Strong Brand Behind Them
There isn’t one magical marketing tactic that every business needs. SEO might be fantastic for one business. Networking could drive another. Instagram, email, referrals, Pinterest, partnerships, blogging, or paid advertising could all play a role depending on your audience, industry, and goals.
The important question is what happens when someone finds you. Do they immediately understand what you do? Do they recognize themselves in your messaging? Does your business look and feel like it’s built for the caliber of client you’re trying to attract? Do your words and images give someone a reason to trust you instead of clicking over to the next option?
Before adding another tactic to your marketing to-do list, strengthen the foundation. Get clear on your brand strategy, know your person, nail your messaging, and build a cohesive visual identity. Then go market the heck out of it! And if you want a next level brand experience, book a call with me!
