As Denver commercial photographers, we really can’t overstate the importance of wearing the right fit for your branding photoshoot. But what NOT to wear?? There’s so much conflicting information online, but I recently worked with Sapna and she proved that my advice is tried and true. Check it out.

About the Shoot
Sapna is a lawyer teaching leadership to younger lawyers. She has an amazing course that focuses on building confidence and navigating the difficulties of law as a profession (you can see her program right here). And Sapna’s branding photoshoot is a great example for our topic today. She wore blazers in lighter colors, giving her shape and keeping her nice and bright in the portraits.
Now, let’s talk about what not to wear.

All Black is a No-No at a Branding Photoshoot
The first and most common advice I hear floating around is that “black is slimming.” Don’t wear all black!! Black from head to toe makes you look shapeless! If you really feel comfortable in black, pair it with a jean jacket or wear a white shirt under a black blazer to create contrast. You will love the result so much more, I promise!

Skip the Sleeveless
Next, skip the sleeveless. Sleeveless blouses look seasonal, like springy or summery. Another thing I’ve noticed as a photographer: most women don’t love their arms! Sleeveless shirts can make many feel self-conscious in photos, rather than giving that necessary confidence boost. Actually, it’s just a good rule of thumb to pick professional styles that emphasize YOUR favorite features, regardless of what you may think others will like.

Stay in Style
The goal of your branding photoshoot is to keep your brand updated and professional. For that reason, I also recommend that my clients don’t wear seasonal clothes. Sweaters, scarves, or sundresses are the main culprits! You want your photos to last all year long, and wearing last season’s accessories is not the move for your next summer campaign.

Watch out For Short-lived Trends
And lastly, have you heard of micro-trends? They’re all over social media. I’m talking these “statement” styles that go out within a month or two! Don’t wear super trendy clothes. While some trends might be here for the long haul, most go out of style too quickly, which dates your brand and your photos.

Just to review, when you’re considering what to wear for your branding photoshoot, pick styles that are classic and timeless. And most importantly, pick outfits that really make you feel confident as the leader of your brand! I can’t wait to work with you.
