What Website Builder is the Best? Squarespace vs Showit vs WordPress

Intentional motion blur follows a man walking through the foreground while a woman in a tan blazer remains sharply in focus against a minimalist white studio backdrop, creating dynamic website photography captured by a branding photographer during a denver branding session.

If you’ve ever searched for the best website builder, you’ve probably discovered that everyone has a different opinion. Some people swear by Squarespace because it’s easy to use. Others love the creative freedom of Showit (hey, that’s me!). And then there are the WordPress enthusiasts who will tell you it’s the only platform you’ll ever need. So…who’s right?

What Is the Best Website Builder?

The thing is, there isn’t one website builder that’s perfect for every business. The best choice depends on your goals, your budget, your comfort with technology, and how much flexibility you want as your business grows. As someone who works in branding and helps entrepreneurs build memorable brands, I’ve learned that the platform itself is only part of the equation. A beautifully designed website paired with professional branding photography, thoughtful messaging, and a clear customer journey will always outperform a website built on the “perfect” platform with little strategy behind it.

Whether you’re working with a brand strategist for the first time or refreshing your existing website, understanding the strengths and limitations of today’s most popular website builders can help you make a confident decision. And I want you to make a confident decision! So, let’s see which website builder works best for you.

Squarespace: The All-in-One Website Builder

If you’re looking for a website builder that’s simple, polished, and easy to maintain, Squarespace is one of the best places to start. Designed with small business owners in mind, Squarespace offers professionally designed templates, built-in hosting, security, and customer support. That means you can focus more on growing your business and less on managing the technical side of your website.

Pros of Squarespace

One of Squarespace’s biggest strengths is its ease of use. Its drag-and-drop editor makes it possible to build a beautiful, professional-looking website without needing to know how to code. For many entrepreneurs, especially those launching their first business, this simplicity is a huge advantage.

Squarespace also includes many essential website features in its subscription, including SSL security, website hosting, mobile-responsive templates, analytics, blogging tools, and basic SEO settings. Having these features built in means there are fewer third-party tools to manage, making the platform approachable for beginners.

Another reason many photographers and creative entrepreneurs choose Squarespace is its clean, modern design. The templates are visually appealing right out of the box, making it easier to create a professional online presence that reflects your brand.

Cons of Squarespace

While Squarespace is incredibly user-friendly, that simplicity comes with some limitations. Once you want to move beyond the template’s built-in structure, customization options become more restrictive than platforms like Showit.

As your business grows, you may also find yourself wanting more advanced features, integrations, or control over your site’s functionality. Although Squarespace has expanded its capabilities over the years, it still isn’t as flexible as WordPress for custom development or advanced SEO customization.

For many small businesses, however, these limitations may never become an issue. If your goal is to launch a beautiful, professional website quickly without spending hours learning web design, Squarespace is an excellent option. It provides a strong balance between design, functionality, and ease of use, making it especially appealing for entrepreneurs who value simplicity.

Showit: The Creative’s Dream Website Builder

If creative freedom is at the top of your wish list, Showit is a website builder that’s hard to beat. Originally designed with photographers in mind, Showit has become a favorite among creative entrepreneurs, coaches, and service-based businesses who want a website that feels completely unique to their brand. And total transparency here, it’s my favorite too!

Unlike many website builders that rely on structured templates, Showit allows you to design each page with true drag-and-drop functionality. You can place text, images, and design elements exactly where you want them, giving you complete creative control without writing code. It’s amazing!

Pros of Showit

Showit’s biggest advantage is flexibility. If you have a specific vision for your brand, you’re far less likely to feel limited by the platform. Whether you’re showcasing a portfolio, highlighting client testimonials, or creating a custom homepage experience, Showit gives you the freedom to build a website that reflects your personality and business. I’m talking 100% custom.

Another standout feature is its approach to mobile design. Rather than automatically adapting your desktop layout, Showit allows you to customize the mobile version of your website separately. While this requires a little extra work, it gives you greater control over how visitors experience your brand on every device.

One of Showit’s most valuable features is its integration with WordPress for blogging. While your website pages are built in Showit’s visual editor, your blog runs on WordPress, giving you access to one of the most trusted content management systems available. For business owners who plan to publish regular blog content, this combination offers excellent flexibility and strong SEO potential.

As someone who works in Denver branding, I often recommend Showit to businesses that want their website to feel as intentional as the rest of their brand. A well-designed website paired with professional brand photography creates a cohesive experience that helps build trust before a potential client ever reaches out.

Cons of Showit

The same creative freedom that makes Showit so powerful can also make it more challenging for beginners. Because there are fewer design limitations, it’s easier to create inconsistent layouts if you don’t have a clear brand strategy or understanding of good web design principles.

Showit is also typically more expensive than Squarespace, especially for businesses that need blogging functionality. While many users find the investment worthwhile, it’s something to consider if you’re launching on a tight budget.

Finally, although Showit offers ecommerce options through integrations, businesses with large online stores or complex product catalogs may find platforms built specifically for ecommerce to be a better fit.

For service-based businesses, photographers, coaches, and personal brands, however, Showit strikes an excellent balance between creative freedom and ease of use, making it one of the most visually flexible website builders available today.

WordPress: The Most Powerful Website Builder

If you’re looking for a website builder that can grow alongside your business, WordPress is often considered the gold standard. In fact, WordPress powers more than 40% of all websites on the internet, making it the world’s most widely used content management system. Its popularity comes from one key advantage: flexibility.

Unlike Squarespace or Showit, WordPress is an open-source platform, meaning you have nearly unlimited control over your website’s design, functionality, and performance. Whether you’re building a simple service-based website or a large online store, WordPress can be customized to fit your business needs.

Pros of WordPress

One of WordPress’s greatest strengths is its scalability. As your business grows, your website can grow with it. Thousands of themes and plugins allow you to add everything from appointment scheduling and email marketing integrations to advanced ecommerce features and membership sites.

WordPress is also known for its powerful SEO capabilities. While no website builder can guarantee top rankings on Google, WordPress gives users greater control over technical SEO, page structure, metadata, image optimization, and performance through a wide variety of plugins and customization options. For businesses planning to invest in long-term content marketing and blogging, WordPress can be a significant advantage.

Another benefit is the large community of developers, designers, and educators who support the platform. Because WordPress has been around for more than two decades, there are countless resources available if you ever need help or want to expand your website’s functionality.

Cons of WordPress

With greater flexibility comes greater responsibility. Unlike all-in-one platforms such as Squarespace, WordPress requires you to manage (or pay someone else to manage) hosting, software updates, security, backups, and plugin maintenance. While managed WordPress hosting can simplify much of this process, it still involves more ongoing attention than other website builders.

In addition, there is also a steeper learning curve. Setting up a WordPress website often involves choosing a hosting provider, installing themes and plugins, and making decisions about site performance and security. For business owners who simply want to launch quickly, this can feel overwhelming.

That said, if you’re willing to invest the time, or work with a professional, WordPress offers unmatched flexibility. It’s an excellent choice for businesses with long-term growth plans, complex functionality needs, or a content strategy centered around blogging and SEO.

So, Which Website Builder Is Best?

Let’s go back to the question we started with: What is the best website builder? The answer generally is that it depends. However, for all my clients, we use Showit.

Showit is one of my favorite website builders because it’s incredibly easy to use and can grow right alongside your business. You can create a completely custom website, without writing a single line of code! And if your business expands and you want to add something like a Shopify store or another third-party integration, you can. Even better, Showit has some of the best customer support I’ve experienced. Their team is quick to help, and their library of tutorials and help articles makes it easy to find answers when you’re ready to tackle something new.
