You walk into a sales call already bracing for the no, or you hit publish on a post and you’re already expecting crickets. I’ve done both more times than I can count, and most of the time I didn’t even realize I was doing it. We all carry expectations into our businesses that we never actually chose, and they quietly shape how we show up long before a client ever says a word. So it’s worth stopping to ask yourself an honest question… are your expectations keeping your business small?
How Expectations Affect Your Business
We all make assumptions about what’s going to happen next, and most of them come from past disappointments, from fear, or from what we think we already know. When you expect the client to say no or the launch to flop, you show up a little smaller, a little more guarded, and a little less sure of yourself. Your brain is wired for self-protection, so it naturally leans toward the bad kind of what if. The tricky part is how quiet it all is… you can talk yourself out of an opportunity before you’ve even given it a real chance.
How to Change Your Expectations in Business
The good news is that your brain can build new patterns, and it gets easier every time you practice. One of the simplest ways I’ve found to do that is to ask myself what the CEO of the business I want would do, so I tried it for an entire day. I was honestly shocked at how many different choices I made just by asking that one question. You start making decisions for the business you’re building, and that changes what you expect from it.
Why Gratitude Matters in Business
Gratitude has been the biggest change in my business and in my life. When I approach my work with gratitude, I notice what’s already working, and that changes what I expect to happen next and how I show up for my clients. It also gives you proof… when you look back at what you once only prayed for and see it sitting right in front of you, believing the next thing is possible gets a whole lot easier. Go listen to the full episode for the three questions I’m asking myself this week, what changed for me on sales calls, and how to start expecting the yes.
