You’ve got a website, that’s a great start! But when was the last time you really looked at it through fresh eyes? A regular website audit is one of the most important things you can do to make sure your site is attracting the right people, converting visitors into clients, and actually reflecting the strength of your brand. Let’s dive into how to do a website audit all on your own!

SEO: Are You Being Found?
Search engine optimization (SEO) is for anyone who wants to be found online. A good audit will check for optimized page titles, meta descriptions, and headers (H1, H2, etc.) with relevant keywords. Your images should also include descriptive alt text, and your blog (if you have one) should be helping you show up in search results. Tools like Ubersuggest or Yoast (for WordPress/Showit) are great for quick checks!

Site Speed: Is Your Site Loading Too Slowly?
If your site takes more than a few seconds to load, visitors are likely to bounce. Plus, a slow site can also hurt your SEO rankings. Use free tools like Google PageSpeed Insights or GTmetrix to test your site’s speed. Pay special attention to oversized image files, outdated plugins, or extra code that may be dragging things down.

Messaging: Does It Clearly Say What You Do
When someone lands on your homepage, they should be able to answer these questions within 5 seconds:
- Who are you?
- What do you do?
- Who do you serve?
- Where are you (if you are service or location based)?
If your site’s messaging is vague, overly clever, or buried under too many words, people will leave confused. It goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyways. Confused visitors don’t convert. Clear beats clever every time!

Content Length: Too Many Words… or Not Enough?
Writing for the web is different than writing for literally anything else. Website content should be clear, skimmable, and purposeful. Avoid massive walls of text, but don’t be afraid to explain your process, values, or services where it matters. Break things up with headings, bullet points, and white space to make it easy for visitors to digest the information.

Strong CTAs: Is There a Clear Next Step on Every Page?
A website without a clear call-to-action (CTA) is like a map without directions. What do you want your visitors to do next? Whether it’s “Book a Call,” “View the Portfolio,” or “Download the Freebie,” every page should have a CTA that guides your visitor toward the next step. Make CTA buttons noticeable and easy to access.

Contact Info: Is It Easy to Get in Touch
One of the biggest mistakes I see? Making it hard for potential clients to contact you. Your contact page should be easily accessible from the main menu. In addition, include a simple inquiry form, your email address, and any other ways people can reach you (like phone or social). Bonus points if you include a friendly photo or message that invites people to connect!

Photos: Are They Helping or Hurting Your Brand?
Visuals are one of the first things people notice on a website. Are your images professional, on brand, and engaging? Or are they outdated, poorly lit, or generic stock photos? High quality brand photography helps your audience build trust quickly and can dramatically boost the credibility of your site. Make sure your images show you, your team, your space, and your process in action.

Mobile Experience: Does Your Site Look Great on All Devices?
Did you know that more than half of your website visitors are probably viewing your site from a phone? A mobile optimized site isn’t optional, it’s essential. During your website audit, check how your site looks and functions on different screen sizes. Text should be easy to read, buttons should be easy to tap, and photos should load cleanly and quickly.

Branding Consistency: Does It Feel Like You?
Your website is a visual reflection of your brand. During your audit, check for consistency in your colors, fonts, tone of voice, and image style. Do all the elements feel cohesive? Does your site reflect your current brand or something from years ago? A cohesive look and feel builds trust and makes your business look polished and professional.

Social Proof: Are You Building Trust with Testimonials or Reviews?
Trust is everything, especially online. Testimonials, reviews, and case studies give potential clients confidence that they’re in good hands. Include real quotes from past clients, link to Google or Facebook reviews, and if possible add names and photos to make them feel more personal. This is one of the simplest, most powerful trust-builders you can add to your site!
