Website design is so much more than aesthetics. And it’s more than just a place to list your services or share your contact information. At it’s core, your site is your digital store front. It has the potential to be your hardest working employee, and one of the most powerful tools you have to build credibility and convert visitors into loyal customers.
However, the challenge is that many small business owners approach website design by focusing on what they want their website to look like instead of how they want it to work. While a beautiful website can certainly capture attention, the best websites do much more than that. They tell your story, answer your audience’s questions, guide visitors through a clear journey, and make taking the next step feel effortless.

A successful website is built with intention. It combines thoughtful design, compelling messaging, strategic branding, and a seamless user experience to create a site that not only reflects your business but also supports your goals. When all of those elements work together, your website becomes a valuable asset that continues working for you long after you’ve logged off for the day.
Whether you’re planning your first website, redesigning an outdated one, or wondering if your current site is doing enough for your business, understanding the basics of website design is the first step. In this guide, we’ll answer 10 of the most common questions so you can create a website that attracts the right audience, builds trust, and helps your business grow.

1. What Is Good Website Design?
Think about the last time you visited a website. If it was easy to navigate, loaded quickly, and answered your questions without making you search for the information, chances are you stayed on the site longer. On the other hand, if it was cluttered, confusing, or difficult to use, you probably clicked away within seconds. That’s the difference good website design can make.
A well-designed website should do more than showcase your business, it should work for your business. It should clearly communicate who you are, what you offer, who you serve, and what action you want visitors to take next. Whether that’s scheduling a consultation, purchasing a product, or filling out a contact form, every page should guide users toward that goal.
Good website design also reflects your brand. Your colors, fonts, imagery, messaging, and overall layout should feel consistent with your brand identity, creating an experience that builds trust and leaves a lasting impression. When someone moves from your social media to your website, or from your website to an email, the experience should feel cohesive and familiar.
At the end of the day, good website design strikes the perfect balance between form and function. It looks professional, works seamlessly on every device, and creates an experience that helps visitors feel confident choosing your business. When your website is designed with both your audience and your business goals in mind, it becomes one of the most valuable tools in your marketing toolkit.
2. Why Is Website Design Important for Small Businesses?
As a small business owner, your website is one of the few places online that you completely own. Unlike social media platforms, where algorithms change and trends come and go, your website is your space to tell your story, showcase your expertise, and create an experience that’s uniquely yours.
A thoughtfully designed website can also save you time. Think about how many questions you answer over and over again: What services do you offer? How do I book? What should I expect? What makes you different? The list goes on! Trust me, I get it, I was in the same boat. That is, until I tweaked my website strategy. A strategic website anticipates those questions and answers them organically before they’re ever asked. Allowing you to spend more time serving your clients instead of responding to repetitive inquiries.
Most of all, your website should support your business goals. Whether you want to generate leads, book more consultations, sell products, grow your email list, or educate your audience through a blog. Every page should have a purpose. Good website design isn’t about adding more features and pretty elements. It’s about creating a clear path that helps visitors take the next step with confidence.
3. Which Website Creator Is Best?
There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer to this question. The best website creator depends on your business, your goals, and how you plan to use your website. Platforms like WordPress, Squarespace, Wix, Shopify, and Showit all have their strengths.
That said, if you’ve worked with me before, you probably know that Showit is my platform of choice, and for good reason.
One of the things I love most about Showit is the creative freedom it offers. Unlike many website builders that limit where you can place content, Showit allows you to design without feeling boxed in by rigid templates. If you’ve ever dreamed of a website that feels completely custom and truly reflects your brand, Showit makes that possible.
Another reason I recommend Showit is how user-friendly it is. Once your website is built, making updates is surprisingly simple. Whether you’re swapping out brand photos, updating your services, publishing a new blog post, or refreshing your website copy, the platform is intuitive and easy to navigate. You don’t need to know a single line of code!
In addition, if you ever get stuck, Showit has an extensive library of helpful tutorials and support articles, so you’re never left trying to figure things out on your own. That means your website can easily grow and evolve alongside your business, without needing to hire a developer every time you want to make a change.
Of course, no platform is perfect for every business. If you’re running a large e-commerce store with hundreds of products, a platform like Shopify may be a better fit. But for service-based businesses, creatives, photographers, coaches, and entrepreneurs who want a highly customized website that reflects their brand, I believe Showit offers the perfect balance of flexibility, functionality, and ease of use.

4. How Much Does Website Design Cost?
The cost of website design can vary significantly depending on your needs. A DIY website built on a template may cost just a few hundred dollars a year, while a professionally designed custom website typically ranges anywhere from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. Factors like the number of pages, custom design, copywriting, branding, SEO, and additional features all influence the final investment.
While cost is an important consideration, I encourage my clients to think about the value a website provides, not just the price tag attached to it. A website isn’t simply another business expense; it’s an investment in one of your most valuable marketing tools. A strategically designed website can help you attract qualified leads, answer questions before a discovery call, showcase your expertise, and encourage visitors to take action. It honestly takes out quite a bit of the leg work that comes before your consultation calls, which we love!
Here is a real life example I shared with my email list (link to join at the end of the blog!) recently about the power of a strong website. I had a call with a client who hired me to redo her website and brand about 6 months earlier. She is now booking high end dream clients. Like ONE client was 6 figures. My mind was blown! Anyway, she said something that really stopped me in my tracks.
She said “people don’t balk or question my pricing anymore. They know it is going to be high and they are willing to pay it because that is what they expect”. That is what a good website does. It allows people to see your value and pay your pricing without even giving it a second thought.
5. What Pages Should Every Small Business Website Have?
While every business is unique, there are a few core pages that almost every small business website should include. Think of these pages as the foundation of your website. Together, they help educate your audience, build trust, and guide visitors toward becoming clients.
Home Page
Your homepage is often the first impression people have of your business. Within a few seconds, visitors should understand who you are, what you do, who you serve, and what action you want them to take next. A clear, welcoming homepage sets the tone for the rest of your website!
About Page
Believe it or not, the About page is often one of the most visited pages on a website. People want to know the person behind the business. This is your opportunity to be personable and relatable to build trust before hopping on a phone call. While it should include information about you, remember to connect your story back to how it benefits your clients.
Services Page
Your services page should clearly explain what you offer, and how your services solve your clients’ problems. Avoid using industry jargon, and instead focus on the transformation or results your clients can expect. Keep it simple!
Contact Page
Make it as easy as possible for people to reach you. Whether you use a contact form, list your email address, or include scheduling software, your contact page should remove any barriers to getting in touch. The easier it is to contact you, the more likely people are to take that next step. In addition to the actual page, be sure to include invitations throughout all pages for the viewer to reach out. We want it to be as easy as possible to get them into your schedule!
Testimonials or Reviews
Social proof can be incredibly powerful. Featuring kind words from past clients helps build confidence and reassures potential customers that they’ve come to the right place. If possible, include testimonials that highlight specific results or experiences rather than general praise.
Blog
While not every business needs to publish weekly, a blog is one of the best ways to share your expertise, answer common questions, and improve your website’s SEO. Every blog post creates another opportunity for potential clients to discover your business through search engines while establishing you as a trusted resource in your industry.
Of course, your website may grow beyond these core pages. Actually, I would say that most businesses should build out their website as their brand evolves. But by starting with these essentials, you’ll create a website that’s informative, easy to navigate, and designed to help you book more clients who need your services. And that’s the goal, right?!
6. How Does Brand Strategy Influence Website Design?
One of the biggest misconceptions I see as a brand strategist is that website design starts with choosing a template or deciding on a color palette. In reality, great website design starts long before that with a clear brand strategy. Your brand strategy serves as the blueprint for your website. It defines and shapes everything from your messaging and imagery to your layout and user experience.
For example, if your ideal clients are busy professionals looking for a simple, streamlined experience, your website should feel clean, organized, and easy to navigate. If your brand is warm, approachable, and relationship-focused, your messaging, photography, and design should reflect that personality. Every element should work together to create an experience that’s consistent with your brand.
Brand strategy also helps you prioritize what belongs on your website and just as importantly, what doesn’t. Instead of trying to say everything to everyone, you can focus on the information that matters most to your ideal clients. That clarity often leads to a website that’s easier to navigate, easier to understand, and more effective at guiding visitors toward taking the next step.

7. How Does Website Design Affect SEO?
When people think about SEO (Search Engine Optimization), they often think of keywords and blogging. And don’t get me wrong, those definitely play a big role in your visibility online! However, website design also plays a significant role in how well your site performs in search results.
Search engines like Google want to provide users with the best possible experience. That means they’re looking for websites that are easy to navigate, load quickly, work well on mobile devices, and offer helpful, relevant content. If your website is difficult to use or frustrating to navigate, it can affect both your visitors’ experience and your search rankings. And don’t forget your mobile experience! One of the biggest contributing factors of a successful website is how well it operates on the mobile side!
The good news is that you don’t have to choose between a beautiful website and an SEO-friendly one. The best websites are designed with both in mind. When thoughtful design is paired with quality content, strategic keywords, and regular updates through tools like blogging, you create a website that’s not only enjoyable to use but also more likely to be discovered by the people searching for your services.

8. When Should I Invest in Professional Website Design?
As a website designer, I don’t believe there’s ever a “perfect” time to build a website. But as a brand strategist, I do recognize that there are certain milestones when investing in a professional website can make the biggest impact.
If you’re launching a new business, a strategic website helps you establish a strong foundation from the very beginning. If you’ve been relying solely on social media to market your business, a website gives you a place that you own and fully control the experience. And if you’re pivoting your services, refining your niche, or rebranding, a new website ensures your online presence reflects where your business is today, not where it was when you first started.
A professional website is also a smart investment if you’re planning a rebrand, launching a new service, investing in brand photography, or putting more effort into SEO and content marketing. These pieces work best when they’re supported by a website that’s designed to showcase your business and guide visitors toward taking action.
Ultimately, the right time to invest is when you’re ready for your website to become more than just an online presence. Instead of simply existing on the internet, your website should actively support your business goals, attract your ideal clients, and give you confidence every time you send someone the link.
9. Do I Need a Professional Website Designer?
The answer depends on your goals, your budget, and how much time you’re willing to invest. If you’re just starting out and need a simple online presence, a DIY website can be a great place to begin. Website builders have made it easier than ever to create a functional site, and there’s nothing wrong with taking that route if it fits your current season of business.
However, as your business grows, your website should grow with it. If you’re struggling to communicate your value, attract your ideal clients, or create a website that truly reflects your brand, it may be time to bring in a professional. A website designer does much more than make your site look beautiful. They consider the user experience, your brand strategy, your messaging, search engine optimization, and the overall flow of your website. Every page, image, and call to action is designed with a purpose—to create an experience that guides visitors from “I’m just looking” to “I’d like to work with you.”
Working with a professional also saves you time! Instead of spending weeks (let’s be real, months) trying to learn a new platform, troubleshoot technical issues, and second-guess every design decision. You can focus on what you do best: running your business. So while DIY may be tempting because of the budget, it isn’t quite as strategic.
10. How Do I Know If My Website Needs a Redesign?
Just because your website is a few years old doesn’t necessarily mean it’s time for a redesign. A well-built website can serve your business for years. The real question is whether your website still reflects your brand and supports your business goals.
One of the biggest signs it’s time for a redesign is when your business has evolved. Maybe you’ve refined your niche, added new services, rebranded, or started attracting a different type of client. If your website no longer represents who you are or the business you’re building today, it’s probably time for an update.
Another sign is if your website isn’t working as hard as you are. If visitors aren’t contacting you, your messaging feels unclear, your navigation is confusing, or you’re constantly answering questions that your website should be answering, your site may not be serving your audience as effectively as it could.
You should also consider a redesign if your website isn’t mobile-friendly, loads slowly, or feels outdated compared to your current brand. Technology and design standards continue to evolve, and your website should provide visitors with a seamless experience no matter what device they’re using.
Sometimes, though, a complete redesign isn’t necessary. Small updates, like refreshing your brand photography, rewriting your website copy, improving your calls to action, or reorganizing your content, can make a significant difference. Before starting from scratch, it’s worth evaluating whether your website needs a full redesign or simply a strategic refresh.
