I am here to help you level up your business through branded images that tell your story!

What is the biggest question I get when people book a session with me? What do I wear for my photos? Not just what to wear but specifically, what colors to wear for your branding photos. Have no fear…I am here to help you out.

What NOT to wear

First things first. Let’s talk about what color not to wear for your photos. I am about to break some hearts here, but you shouldn’t wear black. I know the thought is that black is slimming…however on camera, the black doesn’t give you any shape and therefore it makes you look LARGER than you really are. If you are really stuck on black, then wear the black in the form of a jacket or vest and then wear something that is a little more form fitting that gives you shape underneath the jacket. Or wear black underneath a jean jacket or blazer. The jacket will help give you shape so you don’t look like a black blob. I once did a maternity session where she wore all black and you couldn’t tell she was pregnant…she just looked large for no reason. Always choose color!

Branding Colors

We tend to pick branding colors that we like and feel good in…so wear those colors. It will help make your images cohesive with the branding on your website and social media and will fit with the style and look of your brand. You don’t have to dress in your branding colors from head to toe. Instead you could add accents of your brand colors through jewelry, hats, jackets and accessories. Accessories and jewelry are key for a great photo shoot!

House of Colour

All of these images were from my branding session with Ashley from House of Colour. I found her through a mutual friend and I was intrigued by what she does. Having a color analyst in my back pocket and to refer branding clients to is something I have thought about for a while. So I checked it out and booked an appointment with Ashley and it has changed my wardrobe and made me so much more confident when I go to get dressed.

I also love Ashley’s bold choice of color in what she wears everyday but particularly what she choose for her photos. She makes everything look good! Bright pink and navy blue isn’t a combo that you would typically think of, but DANG….she rocked it.

Also, if you can’t tell….Ashley is extremely talented and passionate about what she does.

Color Analysis

If you have never had a color analysis done, I highly recommend it! Ashley from House of Colour is an expert at finding what season and what colors look best on you. It is so helpful to know what colors bring life to your face and make you shine! If you can fit a session in with Ashley (or a color analyst in your area) before your brand, it will make you more confident in your choices for your photo shoot. No more guessing about what to wear.

What colors to wear for your branding shoot

If you are nervous about wearing bright colors, that is fine! Neutrals are always good for branding shoots and then you can dress it up with color in your jacket, accessories and jewelry. Whites, creams, grays and browns are perfect for shoots, especially if you are shooting in a place with a lot of color or if you are shooting outdoors. The bright colors worked well for Ashley because we were shooting in her GORGEOUS white studio. Just remember to use black really sparingly. And according to Ashley…there is only ONE season (so basically 1/4 of the population) that should wear black. I am a fall and therefore brown is my new black and I get so many compliments when I wear brown!
