How to Prep for Your Senior Pictures Session

Your senior pictures are a great opportunity to showcase YOU through photography! As a Denver senior photographer, I know the experience will be so fun and so rewarding. To help you get pumped for your unique photo session, I’ve put together some of my best ideas for preparing for your senior pictures session. Check it out!

Organize Your Clothes by OUTFIT

If you’re heading out for senior pictures with me, you’ll probably be bringing 2-3 outfits, or maybe more! As you pack for the session, it’s only natural to stack pants with pants and shirts with shirts. But did you know that bringing outfits like this can get really confusing? You may accidentally mix up your sets…or lose valuable shooting time to figure out what goes together.

Instead, organize your clothes by outfit by using garment bags. A garment bag will also help keep your clothes from being wrinkled or snagged in transport, even if you’re bringing a formal gown!

If a garment bag is out of the question, use what you have to organize outfits. Pants and shirts can be added to the same hanger. Add a ziploc bag to the hanger with your jewelry and a grocery bag for your shoes. Keep it all together, and you can pull a full outfit and quick change for your next shot.

Don’t Forget Your Hair & Nails

Your senior pictures session will require a lot more photos of your hands than you might think, especially if you’re posing with props, like an instrument or sport equipment. We use your hands to create poses for both guys and gals. To increase your confidence, get your nails done (or at least make sure there aren’t chips in the polish). Guys, trim your nails and get the dirt out from under them. I’m serious.

Another suggestion: DON’T get a haircut the day before your senior pictures—give it a week! You’ll like your look better if it’s had a while to grow in.

Lay Everything Out the Night Before Your Senior Pictures Session

Trust your Denver senior photographer here: you’re gonna get excited. You’re gonna get forgetful. Don’t trust your future self to remember every single thing you need to bring to your senior pictures!

Lay out ALL your things the night (or day!) before so you don’t forget things or feel rushed: clothes, accessories, props, extra chapstick, everything! Add makeup for touchups and an extra granola bar for the drive over because you will probably forget to eat. Trust me…your scatterbrained future self will be so glad to have everything prepared and in one place. When it comes time to leave and you are rushing out the door because your hair took longer than you thought, you will be happy you prepped early!

Follow my tips and you’re sure to feel prepared for this important session! If you haven’t already, check out my other posts on senior photos, like this one on what props to bring.
