Building a strong brand is primarily about your message, values, and overall mission. However, smaller details within your branding, like fonts and colors, play a role in consistency, recognition, and your overall vibe. Today, we will talk about how many fonts a brand should have, tips for choosing quality characters, and where to easily find them.

How Many Fonts?

Your brand should have no more than 3 fonts. However, as a brand coach I totally get it when my clients have a hard time choosing just 3. There are a lot of typography available to you, and its hard to know which ones will work best for your specific branding.

When choosing letter styles for your branding, start with about 5-10 you really like. Be sure there is a variety of script, serif, sans serif, monospace, ect. Then, start pairing them up and see what looks good together. This will help you narrow it down to 3 fonts that are cohesive.

How to Choose

Typically, more decorative types, like a script, will be used for headings. While serifs and monospace types will be for paragraphs, list and other long forms of writing. Keep this in mind while making your pairings. I recommend you stick to one decorative font, and the other 1-2 should be serif, sans serif or monospace. Mixing types of fonts will add interest to pages and give the eye a break.

In addition, the most important thing to remember while choosing typography is to make sure they are legible. Avoid fonts that have too many decorative elements, as they will be difficult to read and even deter from your messaging.

Where To Find Different Fonts

There are tons of websites where you can download free and low-cost fonts. I recommend finding fonts that are readily available on Google. This is a safe site that will allow you to download free basic styles and ensures that they are used in a variety of places online (making it easier to use them for websites and other online spaces). Once you download those files you can add them to your Canva branding as well as your websites settings.
